The constituency covers an area of 6,133.70 square kilometers. Kitui South Constituency experiences the highest incidence of poverty in Eastern province which stood at 76 per cent by 2012 according to study by Ministry of Planning and National Development titled: Geographic Dimensions of Well -Being in Kenya; Who and Where are the Poor? Though it has low density of population, the construction of the Kitui-Kibwezi Road in the constituency will create high influx of people due to pull factors necessitated by economic activities associated with the project. The fact that the constituency covers the Eastern part of Tsavo National park is another potentially significant factor for economic growth in the area.
